Course

Granuloma develop over an extended period. They are usually the result of a continuous insult to the respective area of skin. Granuloma usually appear as larger swellings of the skin or well-defined lumps. Erosion or inflammation may be visible at their surface.

Cause

If a foreign body such as an awn or a thorn is entering the skin, a granuloma will often develop at the point of entry. Excessive licking of the skin can be another causing factor. Commonly affected skin areas are the limbs or the flanks.

Therapy

Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause. A foreign body may be removed surgically. Otherwise, a thorough clinical examination is necessary to determine the underlying cause of the granuloma. Anti-inflammatory drugs may shrink or even remove a granuloma.

Emergency measures

The earlier a granuloma is treated, the better the chances for a full recovery. Excessive licking of the skin almost always has an underlying cause, which has to be treated before this behavior leads to more severe skin conditions.
